High Performance Yet Responsible, Xpore’s Solvent Free Performance Textile

Xpore Column / 2021.08.31

People say the textile industry is the world’s major polluter. People say the fashion industry is one of the dirtiest industries. Xpore has found a better way. Based on its materials science expertise, Xpore has developed a nanoporous membrane with premium waterproof capability, breathability, and moisture permeability, combined with customized fabrics, and brought its safe, eco-friendly, PFC-free and solvent free textile to market.

Most people might know the dangers of PFCs, but what about solvents?

  • 1. They are harmful to human health, regardless of who produced the textile or who wears the clothes.
  • 2. They harm the Earth’s health: some solvents pollute water, others pollute the air.
  1. 3. Aren’t the above negatives enough?
  2.

Before we continue, you might need to understand the basic structure and the production process of performance textile in advance. It’s composed of 3 layers, outer layer, performance membrane, and inner layer. To laminate these 3 layers together, the glue is needed for sure. The main issues are about the membrane and glue. To achieve expected performance, the manufacturing process of some membranes sacrifice the environment. Solvent based glues are also used to adhere different layers to each other.

The solvents do have negative effects on human health. They cause damage to the respiratory system, nervous system, and viscera, which vary from the type of solvents. They contaminate the water we might drink or where the fish live, also the air we and other creatures breathe.

With sustainability and eco-friendliness as core principles, Xpore’s membrane is manufactured through a process that is 100% free of solvents. Furthermore, Xpore selected environmentally friendly glues with excellent performance in terms of adhesion strength, weather and aging resistance, and won’t release harmful substances such as VOCs (volatile organic compounds) to the environment.

Performance clothing has multiple functional benefits. Why not wear one with excellent performance yet responsible?
